A day in the life of a Content Creator

Custom designing educational material requires a unique and multifaceted set of expertise. In South Africa, there is no specific training for this type of role so we rely on a team made up of creative thinkers and fast-learners from diverse fields and backgrounds.

Traditionally, the role of creating educational material lies in the hands of textbook writers and teachers, who would then engage with their learners face-to-face. With the increasing demand for flexible access to educational material, the role of instructional design has evolved. Enter: the Content Creator. At Hubble Studios, our Content Creation team is redefining what it means to be a writer in the fast-paced, growing EdTech industry.

What you might not know about the role

Because education is changing so rapidly, many people are unaware of what exactly it means to create content for online learning. So, here’s a brief snapshot into a day in the life of a Content Creator.

The above scenario is just a snapshot of a typical day in the life of a Content Creator. In addition to storyboarding content, we also take on a variety of other tasks:

  • Research
  • Course design
  • Content writing
  • Editing and proofreading
  • Adapting existing material for e-learning
  • Briefing graphic designers and videographers
  • Writing scripts and supervising filming
  • Assessment writing
  • Implementing content on an authoring tool, such as Articulate Rise or Storyline

It is thrilling to work in an industry that is advancing and changing so quickly. This, along with the relative newness of EdTech in South Africa, and the range of projects Hubble Studios takes on, means we are of continuously learning new skills. Whether it be basic programming or graphic design theory, the Content Creation team is constantly adapting to the unique needs of each project.

What we are passionate about

It probably goes without saying, but as Content Creators specialising in educational content, our biggest passion is learning. We are educators who believe in the power of technology to enable education and development in a rapidly globalising world.

In the Content Creation team, we value:

  • Continuous learning
  • Professional integrity
  • Honest and supportive collaboration
  • Creativity and innovation
  • Learner-centred education
  • Celebrating our achievements

Together, these values are the driving force behind our daily activities.

Challenges a Content Creator faces

Producing high-quality educational material is challenging. Every decision we make has to keep the learner’s best interest in mind. And as a writer, putting the interest of someone else at the forefront of what you do comes with practice and experience. While we aren’t expected to be teachers or subject matter experts (SMEs) in the traditional sense, it is our job to understand how the brain learns best and how people approach online learning. This forms a collaborative process with SMEs, where we contribute our expertise to create a better overall learning experience.

Our role as Content Creators, while multifaceted, is beyond rewarding. We are curating and crafting content and learning material with the hope of inspiring learners to place learning at the top of their to-do list. This drives the team to stay ahead of EdTech trends so that we can build courses that captivate our audience. But innovation is no simple task. This is why collaborative innovation plays a key role in the Hubble Studios Content Creation team.

We seek to inspire, to promote exploration, and to champion learning in the online space.
